During both world wars this country unashamedly used artists to maintain moral and manage public information messages, employing artists like William Orpen, John Singer Sargent and Graham Sutherland.   This approach was no less relevant during previous centuries with artists like Titian and Velazquez.  The Romans were aware that portraits of their leaders were crucial to how their empire was perceived.  Propaganda only becomes a tainted word when it is used by our enemies and dictators whose values we abhor.   Join me to consider some scintillating art.
